Our Indigenous veld goats run in a mixed herd including Dorper sheep and Nguni Cattle. The goats are not brought home at night and are left in the veld to rear their kids in a natural evironment. Kriegerskraal Farm is holistically managed. We do not dip or dose our animals nor give supplementations. Our animals must survive in the veld naturally. A strict selection criteria towards good mothering abilities, hardiness and fertility is followed.

What are the indigenous veld goats in South Africa?
The indigenous veld goat population is comprised of a mixture of large (e.g., Nguni, Tswana, Matebele) and smaller East African (e.g., Landim, Mashona, Malawian) indigenous goats (Figure 1). These goats are generally characterized by small body size, slow growth rate, low milk yield and low carcass weight.

These include the Cape Speckled goat, Nguni-type goat, Cape lob-eared goat and Kunene goat. The Veld Goat is the basis of most other indigenous breeds and as a result they share many of the same characteristics of more recent breeds.
